ANNUAL MEETING WITH RAIL ACCROSS THE ROCKIES

The Annual Meeting part of the evening is set out here:

WAG AGENDA AGM 2018   and  WAG 2018 ACCOUNTS

Our speaker is Charles Spencer who will tell all aout  a treck to the South African Veldt in October, this months odessey by Welshpool’s  rail enthusiast group will be to the praries and mountains of Northern America.

This time the group will discover how the Canadian Nation was literally stiched together by the building of the great Transcontinental railway.

On Monday 19th November, Charles Spencer, General Manager of the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway will be guest speaker at a meeting of the Welshpool Area Group, which supports this local tourist line.

As a former Canadian Banker, Charles is well placed to talk about the history and role of the Great Canadian Pacific Railway. From its beginnings in the late nineteenth century right up to date, it has played a crucial in linking the early Ango-French provinces of the Eastern Seaboard with its vast prarie hinterland, the Rockies and the shores of the Pacific.

However, the Canadian Pacific will only be one of the railways about which Charles will speak. Experience of the Railways of the Isle of Man and latterly as a volunteer (and now General Manager) on the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway will enable him to draw on his knowledge and reminiscences of all three for a varied and stimulating programme.

This meeting will be held in the Council Chamber of Welshpool Town Hall beginning at 7.30pm. Members and non-members are welcome to attend.  A small charge of £3 will be made to cover costs. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available and there will be chance to book for the groups annual Christmas Dinner held in December.

The famous Blue Train comes to Welshpool

The famous Blue Train, running for more than 950 miles over two days from Cape Town to Pretoria may cost around £1,000 for the most luxurious single journey option but local people around Welshpool can get a glimpse of the fabulous veld scenery of South Africa and of its trains much more cheaply and without ever leaving Wales thanks to the next speaker at the Towns popular railway club.

Simon Bowden, who is a senior volunteer driver on the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway and the organiser of the Thames Valley Area Group, will give a talk on the Railways of South Africa and Zimbabwe on Monday 15th October 2018 at 7.30pm in the Council Chamber of the Town Hall.

The meeting has been organised by the Welshpool Area Group as part of its Autumn and early Winter series of meetings.  Non members are welcome to attend as well as members.  A donation of £3 to cover expenses is requested and there will be light refreshments and raffle.

Further details are available from Steve Page (Vice Chair) on 01686 650102.
